Practice Design Competition Winner 2000

Copeland Veterinary Surgeons, Ingleby Barwick, Stockton on Tees
A new small animal veterinary practice owned by Derek and Penny Copeland.

Extracts from the judges' notes:
  • This is a very well executed, distinctive design of veterinary practice both inside and out.
  • Touches like the logo etched glass portico and high sloping waiting room ceiling make all of the difference. Waiting room layout is very good for client welcome and communication. The beige/wood and blue colour scheme including the logo and wall design work well with a relaxing very light pink through the rest of the building.
  • The consulting rooms are large but cleverly laid out to support the computer system without impinging on client/vet communication. The abundant matching cupboards and drawers throughout the building allow a remarkable lack of clutter, everything is neatly tucked away.
  • The prep room with glass walled theatre is brilliantly conceived and executed. The whole practice smacks of quality. There are no surface pipes or trailing cables, they have all been planned and routed under the surface.
  • The tub table has all the dental equipment tucked away within it.
  • Floor sockets supply power to the middle of the prep room.
  • An intensive-care/recovery unit next to the operating theatre but with a large glass window makes for good observation of patients. This room is on a separate heating circuit: a clever touch.
  • I could make few criticisms of this practice. The cat ward has a potential and first class new location in the existing staff room. There is no laboratory but room in the dispensary to create one. These are, however, relatively minor gripes and I think that this practice is the best executed design with much innovation.
  • Use of space is good and value for money reasonable.
