Designing the Future: Innovative
Solutions for the Veterinary Facilities of Tomorrow: This progressive
veterinary design book by Mark R Hafen AI NCARB will help you plan a hospital
that addresses your current needs and anticipates your future ones. The book
explains the design, scheduling, and construction process and offers models
that illustrate the range of available veterinary design possibilities. Plus,
the author includes 34 case studies that show how practitioners adapted these
models to build facilities that meet all their practice needs. Chapter titles
include History of the Veterinary Profession, The Evolution of the Companion
Animal Facility, The Typical Pet Owner: An Evolving Picture, Changing Markets,
Changing Consumers, Innovations in Technology, Snapshot of the Industry, The
"Successful" Practice, The Need For Strategic Design, The Super Clinic, More
Design Innovations, Design of the Near-Future Clinic, The Million-Dollar
Clinic, A Compendium of Design Ideas, Facility Types, Design Drivers, Design
Organization-The Foundation, A Menu of Design Solutions, Build, Remodel, or
Lease, Market and Site Selection, Assembling Your Building Team,: Evaluating
Your Cost and Benefit Centres, Strategies for Development, The Design and
Construction Process and Schedule and Case Studies: Implementing
Ideas.
"Design it Right": a Pre-Architect Primer
for Planning Your Veterinary Facility Flow.. By Thomas E Catanzaro DVM
MHA FACHE for the American Animal Hospitals Association. This book is intended
principally for vets in the early stages of planning their new clinics. It is a
loose leaf spiral bound text of 130 pages in seven chapters. The book guides
the reader from the very beginning of the project to evaluating demographics,
estimating budgets and negotiating with lenders through to tips for each area
of the practice and some advice on materials and construction ideas. The book
then covers the art of client flow, patient and staff flow. This is a crucial
area and helps the reader start to think of how their facility will work when
it is eventually finished. There is a large section giving tips on designing
individual areas and then some layout suggestions for individual areas. (review
available on request)
BVHA Practice Design
Guide: Written by members of the BVH Council in October 2010, the
Design Guide covers the topics which are mostly commonly the subject of
questions to the Association. Articles include preparing for your new project,
cabling issues, cold rooms, floor and wall coverings, oxygen generation, PACS
and DICOM, sustainability, ventilation systems, voice communication and water
regulations.
Hospital plan review by the BVHA
Council. The BVHA Council is happy to consider and advise on the
development of your own building or refurbishment plans. This is best done at
the conceptual stage, rather than presenting architectural drawings which will
cost a great deal more to alter: previously practice owners have gone away from
the meeting having decided to move the front door to the other end of the
building! The combined expertise of the BVHA Council can be used to help avoid
pitfalls and will offer guidance to help ensure that your premises fulfil the
RCVS regulations. There are two options. Firstly you can attend a BVHA Council
meeting (held twice a yeary). Around twenty minutes of combined Council time
will be dedicated to examining the plans and providing verbal comments and
suggestions. Alternatively the plans can be submitted by email (preferred) or
post and will be distributed to the members of Council for report by
email.
Pre-Inspection Visits. Practices
can ask for a BVHA Council member to make a pre-inspection visit to their
premises, as an informal check that they are likely to fulfil the criteria of
the practice standards scheme. No liability is accepted, and practices are
asked to sign a disclaimer to this effect before the visit, but it may help to
offer reassurance before spending the money on an RCVS inspection with the risk
of expensive failure. Tier two and tier three practices are eligible for
these visits. Members are asked to pay a fee of £240 (inc VAT) plus the
travelling expenses of the Council member(s) who visits (40p per mile for the
first 100 miles and 20p per mile thereafter or an equivalent value first class
rail ticket). It is expected that membership will be continued for a minimum of
three years post free inspection so helping maintain the significant cost
reduction for members and supporting the Council members undertaking such
visits in their own time. Non members are charged a fee of £480 plus
travelling expenses.
"What is a Veterinary
Hospital?" leaflets. A leaflet designed to inform your clients of the
benefits they receive from attending one of this country's Veterinary
Hospitals. If we are going to the expense of providing Hospital quality
facilities it is important to let our clients know why. The leaflet having been
written by the BVHA also provides a third party endorsement of your hospital
and is well received.
